Michel FortinWho is Michel Fortin?

I'm 42 years old. For over 30 years now, I've played drums in both professional and hobby bands. My influences include John Bonham (Led Zeppelin), Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Keith Moon (The Who), and Ian Paice (Deep Purple).

I've played a variety of musical styles, including Classic Rock, Pop, Alternative, Country Rock, R&B, Blues, Smooth Jazz, Reggae, Metal, Rockabilly, and Ska. However, my favorite is hard rock.

As a versatile drummer, I've played from The Eagles to The Killers, Carrie Underwood to Cold Play, Michael Bublé to Metallica, Pink Floyd to Pink, Fugees to Foo Fighters, and everything in between.

Studio Recordings (1997)

Here are original songs recorded in the same studio Alanis Morisette recorded her first CD before Jagged Little Pill. The band is Buried on Sunday off of our 2nd CD Solomon's Reach. They were the same three songs we played as musical guests on the Tom Green Show.

They were recorded on a Pearl DBXL Series birch shell kit with Pearl hardware, Remo Pinstripe 2-ply skins on the toms and a Reverse Black Dot Ambassador skin on the snare (Pearl free-floating brass snare), and a variety of Sabian AA and AAX cymbals.

Unedited Live Recordings (2002-2004)

Here are some samples from previous bands, all recorded live. They were recorded "off the floor," warts and all, without any edits and with the occasional "Ooops!" The band — believe it or not — is a three-piece band called Conspiracy (i.e., bass, guitar, and drums only).

They were mostly recorded live at the Lockmaster Lounge, Zaphod Beeblebrox, and various other venues in Ottawa, Ontario around 2002-2004 on a Yamaha Stage Custom maple set. (See inset picture. The kit is the exact kit used in the recordings. Click it to enlarge.)

Diggin' For Hoffa (August 2009)

Diggin' For HoffaMy last band was classic rock band Diggin' For Hoffa. Here are audio clips we've recorded in raw, unedited form from some of our practices. They're far from perfect and recorded "off the floor" with a single mic and on the first take. So forgive me for the poor sound quality.

Remember, they're very raw, unpolished, unedited, and recorded "off the cuff" on the first take. Some are even missing vocals or certain parts as the songs were written and recorded on the first take. However, I wanted to give you an example of how I sound like live, warts and all.

Video Recording (2009)

Here's a video of me playing the drums. I wanted to test a new video camera camera and compression software, so I decided to record myself playing along to "Love Gun" by KISS. the video was recorded in May 2009. It looks decent, except for the lighting (that's my fault).

I played using my MP3 player, which I mixed into the video and synched to my playing, so you can hear what I was hearing when I played to the song. Other than that, the video is totally unedited, recorded on the first and only take. Note that I never played this song before.

Drum Set Up (September 2008)

My drum set is a 2007 Sonor Custom kit with maple-birch combo shells. The bass drum is 24", and the toms are 10", 12", 14" and 16". The snare is a brass free-floating 14" Pearl snare. My cymbals are all Sabian. The crashes are AA series, while the hi-hat is an XS and the ride cymbal is a Sabian Paragon.

The heads are Remo Pinstripes 2-ply skins, with an Amabassador (coated) Reverse Black Dot on the snare. My hardware is a combination of DW (double bass pedal and hi-hat stand) and Yamaha cymbal stands. My kit is relatively small and simple, which is great for those small venues and gigs with limited floor space.
