What keeps you awake at night?

20 May 2011 Categories: Memos From Mornin

Moving from the brick and mortar, the other-guy-owns-the-building, world, left me with breathtaking exhilaration. I was free! I was also terrified.

There’s definitely something to be said about “a regular paycheck” which we usually take to mean “secure.” We can sleep easy at night. Why? Because we know it’s going to be there. Or we feel confident it’s going to be there anyway. We don’t have to worry about it.

So why was I terrified at working from home? Because for the most part making a decent enough wage means being an independent contractor. Meaning I’m my own boss. Meaning I have to worry about paying the employee: me. I have to figure out where the next job is coming from. I have to sell/seal the deal. I have to deal with taxes/unemployment insurance/workers compensation. etc. me. Insecurity.

What keeps me awake at night is how am I going to take care of this employee? Pay them? Help them with medical coverage, disability insurance, child care, elder care, furthering education…what ever all else it is they feel they need?

*sits back in chair, sighs *

So what keeps you awake at night? Whatever it is it affects our work. Come share. Maybe we can help each other. Maybe just getting it off your chest will help.

Not having the kind of health and disability insurance that is available (for free) through the employers I have always worked for. After surviving a bout of lung cancer with a hospital bill of $100,000.00, I am reluctant to give up that corporate benefit.

What keeps me awake at night…is knowing I need money to pay my bills and take care of monthly expenses despite the fact that I haven’t been able to find adequate work. I have two daughter at home and I desperately need to find serious work to take care of them and our monthly needs. Having a BA degree and completing a MBA hasn’t seem to have made a difference. **Deep breath followed by a prolonged sigh**

Knowing the mortgage is due the 5th of every month and not knowin if the money will be in the bank to pay it. In my entire life I have never felt this vulnerable. I have never had to ask for help or wonder what is next. Since my job was eliminated and I have been scrambling for work it has been extremely hard to sleep

Having worked nights most of my working life, I seem to function better after 10p. I have multiple physical problems which seem to have multiplied in the last six months, and the pain alone keeps me up until 6a at times. I don’t like sleeping until noon or later, but I’ve learned that my inner clock dictates when I sleep, grrr. Having an overactive mind after 10p doesn’t get things done. If I had a real purpose for being up so late, I know I’d feel much better. Ah well, it is what it is.
