Automotive / technology writer for online publication

If you have 10W-30 in your veins, writing on your mind, and know your way around the smartphone in your pocket, you might just be the writer we need for the automotive section at our consumer electronics website.

We’re US-based online tech and lifestyle magazine covering everything electronic — from the latest Apple iPad developments to innovations in the world of hybrid-electric vehicles. Our content spans from news, expert analysis and guides to in-depth reviews.

Right now, we’re looking to expand our automotive content with a freelance writer who can contribute a handful of articles daily on the latest in the car world. Since our site primarily covers technology, we need someone with a background in tech who can cover the intersection where cars meet gadgets: electric cars, GPS systems, innovative new electronic safety systems, autonomous cars, etc. And let’s be honest: While a tech angle is always in the back of our heads, we’re suckers for “just plain cool,” too.

Writers will typically work from press releases and other official announcements to strip out the PR fluff and drill down to the facts, injecting commentary, references to other relevant news, and occasionally contacting experts and other sources for commentary and clarification. The ideal candidate would be able to deliver two to three short, to-the-point news briefs every day, typically about 300 words in length. Compensation will be $15 USD per short post.

QUALIFICATIONS: Writers will need a basic familiarity with both consumer electronics and cars to write intelligently about them. You don’t need a PhD in mechanical engineering to describe how a new suspension system works, but our enthusiast readers demand accuracy, so an eye for detail is an absolute must.

Keeping a conversational, informed and engaging tone is essential. Many competing tech sites have access to the same sources you will have — like press releases — so we’re counting on your voice to make our news exceptional.

A degree in journalism is not required, but a strong background in writing is. Because the world of tech moves quickly, many of your stories will hit the Web prior to making it through an editor. You’ll need a proficiency in AP Style and an eye for detail and mistakes to produce publishable content without anyone holding your hand.

A sense of autonomy and responsibility are essential. After we show you the ropes, you’ll be expected to smoothly produce content with minimal direction, and accountability for a certain number of posts daily.
